As many of the Palazzi in the city are now owned by commercial concerns, when it’s time for a little renovation they are often swathed in huge screens featuring a representation of the grandeur behind, a practice that I’ve witnessed in other historic cities around Europe.

It doesn’t fool anyone of course, but aesthetically it’s better than networks of scaffolding and timber splints supporting gothic arches.

It’s certainly better than placing a portakabin on the parapet of a Byzantine masterpiece.
