Lido isn’t so far across the lagoon from the city, and its long profile sits low on the horizon given a slight lift by the dome of Santa Maria della Vittoria, which confusingly sits by the vaporetto stop of Santa Maria Elisabetta, the comparatively anonymous parish church of the island.
At night the same view packs more punch, thanks to the judicious use of floodlights. The domed structure demands attention.
Such a pity that back in the cold light of day the building doesn’t deliver on the promise. As a war memorial it does the job I suppose, but something with that chutzpah should be able to back it up with more in the way that the Cambridge war memorial I visited last year does.
So enjoy it for what it does well.
