In a fitting partner to the Moorish extravagance of the Hotel Excelsior, The Lion’s Bar (not to be confused with the Nestlé confection) sits on the other side of the road in a commanding corner location.  This is an art nouveau structure from the 1920’s, so both buildings would have enjoyed a similar heyday.

Overlooking the complex that hosts the main screenings of the Venice film festival, its decor and location make it a particularly desirable spot for an over-priced drink or light meal but here’s the strange thing; it apparently opens only during the festival.  Can that really be true?

Now to maintain such a building from the takings of a few weeks each year…
