Yesterday’s post dealt with the contribution made by Venice to Italian organised crime, but of course the term Mafia has international meaning; the Japanese Yakuza have spawned their own film genre for example, Jamaica produced the Yardies, South America has its drug cartels…  I could go on.

With its close and historical ties to the former Yugoslavia, and the preponderance of Russian visitors to the city, it would be surprising if East European syndicates weren’t operating here.  The Independent has reported on arms trafficking following this route.

So perhaps yesterday’s fantasy about a godfather figure was wide of the mark.  Maybe I should have been looking for someone more like this guy who was running a water taxi operation along the Riva degli Schiavoni
