This term when used by magicians refers to the act of drawing the audiences eye away from their sleight of hand by providing some distraction through movement of the other hand, some audible or visual surprise, an attractive assistant etc.

So it is that when you enter the large space of Campo Sant’Angelo, particularly on a drab and rainy day, the subtle colours of the fifteenth and sixteenth century palaces that face onto the square, and the two 15th century wellheads struggle to compete with a large and well maintained building that adjoins the Palazzo Duodo.  It comprises offices and apartments but it gets your attention all the same.

Because it’s red.
