There’s a small stretch of the Rio de L’Arsenale that contrasts with the clean lines of the quayside I describe yesterday.  On one side the fondamenta runs unobstructed all the way to the gates of the Arsenal, but on the other there are a couple of properties that drive the pedestrian away from the water and back into some shady calli.  Unusually these properties have canalside gardens that remind me of railside cottages in the England of my youth.

A little pruning wouldn’t go amiss.
