Jeff Cotton’s site about Venice features a Q&A in which he confesses that one of his few dislikes about La Serenissima is the graffiti.

Strangely I’m more relaxed about it.  If this were a city of pristine marble I might think otherwise, but with so much of the charm arising from the decaying and crumbling stone, the stains of flood water, and the chaos of humanity, the place feels organic enough to display a few signs of life.
