Katie Melua famously sang that there are nine million bicycles in Beijing; but there could be a few less now as a result of dissident Chinese artist Ai Weiwei‘s installation at Palazzo Franchetti.  The view from the canal isn’t the most striking photographically, but the surprise of seeing what is on display in this corner of the Palazzo Gardens is one of the pleasures of a travelling the canal on returning to the city.

Last time it was Subodh Gupta‘s Very Hungry God, a huge shining skull made from stainless steel pots and utensils, but in the year of the Tour de France inspiring Yorkshire to bring out its bicycles, this seemed fitting.
