…there are only three canals in Venice.  Guidebooks, brochures and websites will tell you that there are in excess of 150, but in the same way that only St Marks is worthy of the term piazza, so only the Grand Canal, Giudecca Canal and Cannaregio Canal are actually called canals.  The rest of the waterways that curve behind palaces and  under bridges are correctly rii (singular rio).

I feel a Duran Duran moment coming on.
