The flag of the Republic of Venice is a common sites among the calle and rii of the city.  It features the winged lion of St Mark in gold upon a rich red background, but unusually the flags shape has six tails too, which represent the six sestiere; San Marco, San Polo, Dorsoduro, Castello, Cannaregio, Santa Croce.  Like the lion that it features it is magnificent when unfurled, and a little less impressive when wet and bedraggled.
