One of the quirks of Italy is that it has multiple police forces; the Polizia and the Carabinieri are the most commonly encountered. As is always the case when you have different teams performing a similar task there is rivalry, and in popular culture the Carabinieri are often poked fun at, partly because their system of posting recruits to other parts of Italy means they are susceptible to misunderstanding local cultures.
