Before yesterday’s post leads to accusations of sexism let me redress the balance.

Strolling through Cannaregio my attention was diverted by a fluttering of fabric on the opposite bank of the canal, not from a flag of the Venetian Republic, nor a more prosaic washing line.  A young man was dressing at the canal side, apparently from the contents of a dry cleaner’s bag with his name still pinned to the outside.  The fluttering was from the shirt hoisted above his head as he thrust his arms into it simultaneously.

I fired off a couple of shots in the hope of some dramatic movement from the fabric, but there was nothing outstanding in the results.  Then, before buttoning, he turned…
