I caught up with a former colleague today. I’ve not seen her for a couple of years, although we’ve stayed in touch through Facebook during the that time.

When we worked together she was an incorrigible flirt with an incredible knack for the suggestive comment or double entendre that would give Frankie Howerd some serious competition. Whether you tried to ignore her or to go one better you were bound to fail.

When we met today this aspect of her character was to the fore as usual. I shouldn’t
really have expected otherwise, but this all changed in an instant. All it took was for a camera lens to be pointed in her direction.

It wasn’t the surprise that produced the reaction; when we had arranged to meet it was always in the knowledge that we would produce a portrait at our get together, but as the moment drew nearer so the nerves kicked in. The funny and confidently flirtatious young woman metamorphosed into a giggly girl who couldn’t make eye contact without breaking into nervous laughter..

Consequently as I shot away I got lots of turning away to stifle hilarity, or looking down to regain composure.
